Bowel Resection clarification
In ICD-10, surgeons will need to be more specific with regards to which portion of the intestine was removed. Specific body parts include:
- Large intestine
- Right Large intestine
- Left large intestine
- Cecum
- Ascending colon
- Transverse colon
- Descending colon
- Signmoid colon
The ambiguity may arise if the physician documents a resection of the large intestine, but does not indicate whether the whole intestine was removed or only part of it. This is the difference between "Excision" and "Resection".
Please help by documenting clearly in the record (even if you are not a surgeon) so this type of record can be easily coded.
